“wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres” adopted from the Ramsar Convention, article 1.1.”
Using this definition assists in applying DIWA classifications to wetlands, as and when it may be appropriate, and reduces opportunity for conflict over definitions. Obviously, not all wetlands covered by this definition will necessarily have been included in data or mapping used for this project.
