The Sustainable Transport Committee (STC) of the Community Environment Committee (CEN) has an interest in promoting effective, efficient and sustainable transport systems on the Central Coast, the Hunter and throughout New South Wales.
The committee’s focus recently has been to promote the need for comprehensive planning throughout the Central Coast. To further this aim the committee would encourage the formation of a Regional Development Corporation by the State government to oversee the expected regional growth of the Central Coast region over the next 25 years.
The Committee has been actively supporting the formation of a dedicated transport plan for the Central Coast. Such a plan not only ensures a revitalisation of the public transport network, but provides a road network that will be the structural framework for future growth particularly in the proposed new release areas around and to the north of Tuggerah.
In 2009 the State Government announced the Central Coast Transport Plan to commence in 2010 and currently the committee is liaising with Transport New South Wales (NSW) in their familiarisation process before forming a draft transport plan for the Central Coast.
The Committee is concerned about the lack of public and private transport facilities around our education institutions and transport hubs including the major stations on the Central Coast and the Central Coast Campus Ourimbah, and is monitoring progress on proposed commuter car parking facilities at Woy Woy and Wyong Stations.
Increasingly the need for more renewable energy sources is becoming apparent and the committee has been interested in promoting cleaner energy systems for the transport needs of New South Wales and Australia.
The Committee sees the hydrogen economy, increases in renewable energy collection (to generate electrical power) and the full electrification of an expanded rail network for freight as the way forward to create a more sustainable energy mix for both transport systems and domestic power for Australia.
The Committee believes that by revitalising the rail network, making it more sustainable and using less fossil fuels while putting a price on carbon, the number of large trucks on the major transport arteries will be reduced, in particular the F3 freeway running the full length of the Central Coast. This will allow the expected growth in domestic travellers on the F3 to travel with more safety from one end of the Coast to the other and to other regional destinations.
